Sex Differences in Health Awareness Day
May 10, 2005 (Tuesday of National Women’s Health Week, May 8-14)

A 2005 National Health Observance, as recognized by the National Health Information Center.

“Sex Differences in Health Awareness Day” informs health care professionals and consumers about key differences in health between women and men that are often overlooked or misunderstood. For example, women and men often have different symptoms and warning signs for heart attacks. There are also many conditions that do not affect the sexes equally. Women are disproportionately affected by osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases and depression, just to name a few conditions.

Both patients and their care providers need to be aware of these differences and the impact they can have on the prevention, diagnosis, progression and treatment of disease.

SWHR has educational materials available for both health care professionals and consumers that outline sex differences across a wide range of diseases and medical conditions, as they relate to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The materials are available both in print and electronically through SWHR’s website: www.womenshealthresearch.org. SWHR’s “Just the Facts” publications outline health differences between women and men in a wide range of important areas. Whether you are a consumer, health professional or researcher, you can find information tailored to your needs on SWHR's website.
