Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD)
OSSD is a non-profit, scientific membership society. OSSD was established in 2006 by the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR), with staffing provided by SWHR. Members include basic and clinical scientists from various disciplines who share an interest in exploring sex/gender differences in all areas of biological, medical, and behavioral science.
OSSD Mission: To enhance the knowledge of sex and gender differences that impact health by facilitating interdisciplinary communication and collaboration among scientists and clinicians of diverse backgrounds.
OSSD Overview: OSSD is the only scientific membership society in North America dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research on biological sex differences. The organizational goals are:
- to facilitate interdisciplinary research on sex/gender differences at all levels of biological organization;
- to advance the understanding of sex/gender differences by bringing together scientists and clinicians of diverse backgrounds;
- to encourage the application of new knowledge of sex/gender differences to improve health and health care; and
- to promote the field of sex/gender differences research through education, mentoring, and outreach.
OSSD Members: OSSD has made a commitment to combine basic biology with clinical research and patient care. Nearly 90% of our members have a doctoral degree, and the majority of those who don’t are actively pursing one. Members represent a number of fields, including: neuroscience, cardiac and vascular biology, physiology, immunology, endocrinology, and genetics.
