What’s the Issue?

Asthma is a disease that affects the tubes, also known as airways, which carry air in and out of your lungs. The tubes become sensitive and inflamed when you breathe something in that you are allergic to, such as animal hair, pollen or dust. When that happens, the tubes become narrow and less air can get to the lungs. People with asthma often wheeze, cough and have trouble breathing.

Allergies cause people to be super sensitive to a variety of different things. When someone has an allergic reaction, his or her immune system is trying to fight off something it thinks is a foreign invader. People who have reactions over and over again may have an allergic disease. The most common allergic diseases include: asthma, hay fever, peanut allergies, bee sting allergies and allergies to certain medications.

Why Should I Care?

Asthma takes a great toll on the lives of women. It is more common in women than in men. Women are more likely to end up in the hospital because of asthma and they are more likely to die from the disease than men. African-American women have a higher chance of dying from asthma than most other racial groups.

Allergies affect millions of people every year. Roughly one out of every ten American women has an allergy to pollen. Some studies suggest that there is a link between hormones and allergies. Pregnant women may find that their asthma symptoms change during pregnancy.

What Can I Do?

People with asthma or allergic diseases can lead normal lives with the right medical care. There is currently no cure, but both conditions can be well-controlled with medications.

Sometimes these conditions run in families. It’s important to discuss your family history with your doctor and to look for any warning signs in young children.

If you have asthma or allergies, it is important to take good care of yourself. Talk to your health care provider about how to live well with these conditions. With the right treatment, you’ll be able to stay in control of your health!
